Visiting A.THUN is more than a typical Art Gallery. Chuck, the owner, interacts with guests kindly and welcoming them as if they were visiting his home. I witnessed a hug he gave to a little guest, about 1 year old. He has a piano set up and plays music, requests preferred. The environment is one of creativity and comfort.
I appreciated the different styles of art in his Gallery. He said they have about 25 artists displaying their work. They have the walls behind each different artist's work painted a different color in order to differentiate. Every wall is covered with wonderful pieces, mostly paintings in different mediums. I saw oil paintings, irridescent paintings, a painting with multi-media including paint, and what looked like gauze to create a three-dimensional bodice of a woman looking out with vague eyes. There were also free-standing units displaying work throughout the Gallery. Jewelry is available. Fun cards and magnets are also there to purchase.
I went primarily because I know Chuck, and I had yet to visit him at his Gallery. He has been opened for several years, 15 I believe, and made it through the awful economic crash in 2008. I like his work. There is a piece called Margarita, an oil painting, I was interested in. The cost is $700. He has a variety of paintings, many of them thematic and portraits. He also has prints available of most of his paintings.
I have to admit I was a bit overloaded and stressed before arriving at the Gallery. Initially I just wanted to go in and look quickly and depart. However, once I went in, I felt so comfortable. My friend had her Rotweiller with her, and Chuck invited them in. We sat by the piano while he took requests and sang. I joined in singing as well, soothing my stress. The atmosphere creates a vibe of relaxation and the artistic flow. And, of course the music lends itself to a fun, casual setting where people are invited to just hang out and enjoy the art.
The Gallery is located in City Market so there were many people who stopped in, and we talked with many of them.
My experience was not what I expected. I was eager to get in and out (was I supposed to admit that?), but once I stepped in, I felt so safe and at ease we stayed for a few hours. I toured the work and saw some fun pet paintings and other quite diverse work.
I am thankful I went. It changed my whole vibe. I am grateful for art and the way it brings me back into myself in a positive and integrated way.
