Lavinia Fontana, Portrait of a Noblewoman, ca. 1580
I will focus on Lavinia Fontana as an example of women in the Renaissance as an artist and painter. She apparently has the most paintings done by a woman before 1700 which are credited to her.
Her father was a painter, which I believe enabled her to enter in his footsteps more easily in their society. I presume she got her name known as a painter, again, from being under her father's tutelage. She was able to make her living painting wealthy socialites, whom will sometimes compete with one another for the latest trend. I wonder if because of that universal practice, her name was passed on by word of mouth resulting in her building her commissions.
She also caught the eye of the Pope for whom she did many projects, which would immediately put her in a favor with any sophisticated patron.
Women in the Renaissance...women at that time were expected to be housewives of course. Bearer of children and tending to the home was the "profession" of women. There were not many women artists because the era did not allow women to work. So although there were some who were usually trained by their fathers and able to make a living, they were few.
And that is where the women were: in their homes having babies and being wives.
